What exactly is Direct IM in AOL Instant Messenger?

A friend sent me a request to Directly Connect on AIM. I accepted the request, and through that connection I was able to see several photos that they shared with me. I was also able to view a live video feed of them…

My question is, were they able to see any of the contents of my computer? Or was the pictures/video they sent me the only exchange of information that went on? Basically I want to know if it’s possible that person was able to access any files on my computer. Please help!
