It seems the issue is after I have too many tabs open or have had FF running for too long that too much memory has been used. I’m able to close tabs shortly after opening firefox but inevitably I’m unable to after some time has passed.
Closing ALL works but individual tabs cannot be closed.

Win XP Laptop SP3
1.7 GHz
1.99 GB Ram
Ctrl+F4 does not work, nor does un-checking the tab option in tools/options..
